Would you like to Make Money Online? Here are 5 Reasons To Quit Your Day Job And Start Blogging
I am going to make a bold statement: Your job is keeping you broke! There, I said it!
I know this from personal experience because after 17 years in the legal field I was flat broke and living paycheck to paycheck.
Loral Langemeier, author of “Millionaire Maker” says:
“People…want to hang onto their secure job with benefits package, even though their passive income would really build momentum if they gave it more time and attention. At this point, these day jobs do NOT offer safety and security as much as they represent MISSED TIME AND OPPORTUNITY.”
So before I tell you the 5 Reasons you should quit your day job (because it’s making you broke) and start blogging, let me share a little about how I got started making money online…
There’s a saying “Getting Fired is Nature’s Way of Telling You that You were in the Wrong job in the first place.”
That’s what happened to me in 2000. I wish I could say I quit my job to follow my dreams, but it didn’t exactly happen that way…
I worked in the legal field for 17 years as a paralegal and legal secretary and I enjoyed what I did for about 12 of those years. Looking back, I realize that I enjoyed working at small firms much better than large firms because of the client interaction and the variety of tasks that the job required. However, I went chasing the big money at the big law firms and eventually woke up every day with this feeling of “dread”. I hated my job and I really didn’t know why. I was making good money, I had awesome benefits and I worked in a prestigious law firm. However, on the inside I was dying slowly.
I fantasized every day about quitting my job, however, as a divorced single mother of 3 young children I didn’t have many options. So I stayed in a job I hated until one day I was told “the department you work in is being restructured and your job no longer exists.” Code for “You’re Fired!”
And so the adventure began! I became a freelance reporter for a local newspaper for a couple of years and also taught workshops and seminars. I was barely making enough to pay the bills, but I had my freedom! I even delivered pizza kits in the evenings with my 3 young children in the car to earn extra money. I would do anything to NOT have to go back to working at the law firm.
Then in 2002, I took an outside sales job that allowed me to work part-time while making a full time income. Apparently, I had the personality and skills to sell! I loved outside sales as I was able to make in one week what it took me to make in one or two months at the law firm! The great part was, I was able to start my online business because I had so much free time.
When someone says they make money as a blogger, I want you to understand that the money comes from a variety of sources such as advertisers, affiliate income, information products, membership sites, services such as coaching & consulting, Google Adsense, paid reviews, ebooks on Amazon and more! That’s the beauty of having your own Blog. You can choose to monetize it any way you like.
I recently did a webinar on the Top 10 Ways to Make Money Online where I show you case studies and take you step-by-step exactly how this is done. Make sure you sign up and get instant access to this webinar.
I am really passionate about making money online and especially on helping others start meaningful blogs that increase their income. Increasing your income and making money online can truly change your life, influence your family’s life, and enable you to make an impact in this lifetime in a powerful way.
Here are my 5 reasons to Quit your Day Job and Start Blogging:
- You Hate Your Job – Obviously if you LOVE your job, then you should keep it. However, if you have a desire to start a blog and create some additional income streams (maybe for your retirement) then I would highly recommend you start a blog. For those of you out there who “dread” going to work like I did, I feel your pain. At the end of the day, we all have bills to pay and we may not have the luxury of quitting our jobs. Making money from a blog doesn’t happen over night because there is a learning curve. So you wouldn’t want to quit your day job and then expect to make money in the first 30 days (although it is possible if you work with a mentor). I recommend weaning yourself off of your day job (go from full time to part time while you are building your online income) until you can afford to do this full time. My online business is the only income I have, however, I do have multiple streams of online income. My advice to you is to reduce the amount of bills you have to pay, so you can play! I once lived in a million dollar house, however, I was cash poor and the market had changed, so I sold the million dollar house and reduced my living expenses so I can have my time freedom! It’s so worth it!
- You Get To Work From Home in Your Jammies – Having had to commute to a large metropolitan city for 17 years, and then being in outside sales for 10 years, I truly cherish working from home. Now I admit, that sometimes it gets lonely. There is no work/home separation…however, for me it works because my children are all grown up now and I don’t have those parental demands on me any longer. I make sure I get out to exercise, take walks in nature, go to the beach, meet with friends and family for lunches, dinners and get togethers, etc. Right now, it’s snowing outside and we’ve got about 6 inches on the ground and I don’t have to worry about going out in the bad weather tomorrow to go to work. I’ll be working in my jammies like I usually do!
- Blogging Makes You the Go-To Expert – I’m sure you’ve heard it said that putting in your 10,000 hours of anything makes you the expert. I’ve been running an online business for 10 years now, so I’ve put in my 10,000 hours! However, the great part is, even if you’re just getting started, you will be perceived as an expert in the topic that your blog is in. Once, you’ve been blogging for a while, you could even write an ebook and sell that on Amazon to increase your credibility and expert status.
- Low Overhead and Expenses – Years ago I used to read the “Home Based Business” magazine faithfully and dreamed about starting my own business. I quickly realized that starting an offline business or purchasing a franchise can be very expensive and there are no guarantees. The beauty of starting a blog and making money online is that the overhead is very low. I run my online business for under $100 per month! However, starting out, it doesn’t even have to be that much. You can start your own blog/website for the cost of a Starbucks Latte!
- No Boredom! – Blogging is exciting because you can write about anything you like. Of course, I recommend that you pick a specific topic that people are searching for and that you are passionate about, however, you can write about anything within that topic. You can start with one income stream and then add more as time goes on which is exactly what I did. I started out selling 2 online courses and then I’ve added several streams of income from affiliate income, to coaching, services such as website design, etc. I think I have 8 streams of online income right now.
I truly believe that for most people YOUR JOB IS KEEPING YOU BROKE! I can honesty tell you that in my circle of family and friends, I don’t know many people that if their job went away tomorrow they could keep the lifestyle they have for very long. Having an online business can be an additional source of income, a retirement plan, or a full time income. It’s up to you. But the way things are in the job market (my good friend just got laid off from Safeway grocery store after 21 years without any notice; and another friend got laid off at the law firm I used to work at after 12 years of employment…without any notice), it’s a good idea to have a Plan B.
